Entertaining the hungry ghosts Chiu Chow style
Once a year in the seventh lunar month the Moreton terrace temporary playground transforms into a wonderland of papier mache, gold leaf, tin prayer halls, and lit opera stages, all for the pleasure and welfare of the dead. Local ghosts are released for one month from the gates of hell and the spirits are entertained by a lavish four nights of Chiu Chow Opera. The living build stages, construct effigies, wash opera dresses, decorate the ghost-attracting truck and make themselves up in theatrical splendor for the pleasure and entertainment of ghosts.
