You Can Do It! (Okay, Maybe Not)

The world's worst band is playing at a neighborhood fest/farmer's market one block from my apartment, but they're so loud that it sounds like they're playing right outside my window. I just ventured out so I could see what they look like and take a picture to show you, but as it turns out they're a group of down-on-their-luck teenagers playing plastic buckets and ginormous metal bazookas (which looks like trombones but aren't), so I felt bad and didn't do so.
But you know, this leads me to something. You want to encourage these kids and be like, "Keep playing your music! You can do it!" But at what point do you tell them they're awful? I mean, the neighborhood is suffering because of the noise. I have my TV turned up all the way to drown them out.
It reminds me of when I played the flute in the fourth grade school band. I thought we were amazing but then we had a concert. Afterward, when I asked my step-dad how we were, he laughed and said, "You sounded like the Charlie Brown school band." I was eight or nine years old at the time, but I was old enough to be told I sucked. I remember not caring. These kids are teenagers... I think it's time someone encouraged them to find another career path because this jam-band thing isn't working out.
(Btw, I couldn't find a clip of the Peanuts gang school band to show you, but you know what I'm talking about, right? They were horrible.)

Justin Bieber Says 'Girlfriends Are Trouble'

Pop star admits he doesn't have much time for dating right now.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash

Justin Bieber at the VMAs on Sunday

Photo: Rachel Goldner/ MTV News

Now that Justin Bieber properly took over the VMAs, lined up a bunch of projects and even announced the release date for his forthcoming 3-D movie, one might think he would want to find that special someone to share his days with. But just moments after winning his Best New Artist VMA on Sunday, the 16-year-old megastar explained that he's too busy for love right now.

"I mean, girlfriends are trouble at this age," he explained to MTV News. "Girls are fun to hang out with but, like, having that one steady girl ... we're constantly traveling and one girl's not gonna really [work]. You can't really have one girl. I don't really have any crushes at the moment."
With so much going on in his life, the "U Smile" singer is just trying to balance his career and personal life. "Right now, the best thing is [that we're] just teenagers having fun doing what we love," he explained. "We're just staying ourselves and remaining humble."
With his "Never Say Never" collaborator Jaden Smith by his side, Bieber revealed that he and the Smith family may work together again in the future, with Bieber possibly working with Will Smith on his next project. However, Bieber kept the details sparse, saying, "We're trying to figure something out."
In addition to trying to re-team with pal Jaden and family, Bieber said that for his next album, he wants to work with his friend and fellow Canadian Drake. "[It'll] probably [come out] fourth quarter next year," he said. "Drake is gonna be on that album. I'm not sure [who else]. I'm gonna ask him if he can get [Lil] Wayne on there."
The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

'Wall Street 2': The Reviews Are In!

Critics are divided, but one praises Oliver Stone sequel as 'urgent and strangely necessary.'By Eric Ditzian

Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"

Photo: 20th Century Fox

Twenty-three years ago, Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" finished third at the weekend box office, losing out to "Throw Momma From the Train" and "Three Men and a Baby."
Times, and tastes, have changed. Stone's sequel, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," is likely to nab this weekend's top box office slot. No matter that critics have not exactly been kind to the film since its Cannes opening in May, after which Stone was said to have headed back into the edit room in search of a new cut. What he found there should be enough to dispatch the animated owls of "Legend of the Guardians" and secure Stone his first #1 opener since 1999's "Any Given Sunday."

Here's what the critics are saying:
The Story
"Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas, sly and purry as ever) walks away from jail in the movie's 2001 opening scene, brick-like cellphone in hand. Seven years pass and he's back on top, with a new book ('Is Greed Good?') and untold millions. But the money can't buy what he wants: a relationship with his estranged daughter Winnie (Carey Mulligan). She lives with her boyfriend Jake (Shia LaBeouf), an up-and-coming young trader who hears Gekko speak and is enamored by his message. Drawn into Gekko's orbit — the older man hopes to use the younger as a conduit to Winnie — Jake gets caught up in the world of deal making, not necessarily to his benefit." — Moira Macdonald, The Seattle Times
The Performances
"Douglas is terrific, and he's joined by fellow heavyweights Josh Brolin, Eli Wallach and Frank Langella as rival financial titans. But the movie belongs to LaBeouf. Stone loves to show us the convoluted world through the lens of a young striver still clinging to antiquated ideals. LaBeouf's shark-in-training manages to keep all of the balls in the air with a winning performance that balances moral wranglings with love and ambition." — Clint O'Connor, The Cleveland Plain Dealer
The Director
"Using an ingeniously layered visual design, split screens and sinuous mobile cameras that move through scenes like the human sharks who inhabit them, Stone here proves that he's still a director of bold muscularity. If some of his references hit too squarely on the nose — the shot of a child's soap bubble standing in for the metaphoric financial version, for example, or the vaguely fascist corporate insignia of a malign CEO played by Josh Brolin — Stone has a knack for pacing, detail and atmosphere that manages to feel authentic and fancifully allegorical at the same time." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post
The Dissenters
"This time around, the team does show occasional flourishes of the original's snap and urgency. However, it's nearly impossible to stay invested in a narrative stuffed with pliable characters whose actions fail to stay true to their natures. That's particularly glaring in a climax that ties everything up with a hunky-doryness that should have been liquidated faster than a risky hedge fund." — Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News
The Final Word
"The movie's punch-drunk energy can't quite make up for what, without giving away any plot points, I can only describe as a third-act lapse into maudlin sentimentality. By the film's last frame, Gordon Gekko has gone from evil to sympathetic to ambiguous so many times that we no longer trust any twist involving him. But thanks in no small part to Michael Douglas' evident joy in playing the role, Gekko has now become one of those characters, like 'The Big Lebowski' 's Dude, who no longer needs a movie to sustain him. Oliver Stone's account of the events of 2008 is as unsubtle in its charms as Gordon Gekko himself. But like Gekko, the film also feels urgent and strangely necessary." — Dana Stevens, Slate

Justin Bieber Gets 'Kudos' For His 'CSI' Cameo

Show's exec producer sings the star's praises over his appearance on the show, airing Thursday.By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber on "CSI"

Justin Bieber might be one of a handful of pop stars to make a cameo on "CSI," but he has certainly left his mark on the cast and the crew of the hit CBS crime drama. When Bieber hits the small screen Thursday night (September 23) for his performance as Jason McCann, he will certainly leave fans stunned by his acting chops, one of the show's producers told MTV News.

"I thought that he did a really good job. We only had Justin for a day, for 10 and a half hours, and he had a lot of work crammed into those 10 and a half hours," executive producer Carol Mendelsohn said about the first of Bieber's two appearances on the show. "And he had one super big scene, and the scene was an interrogation scene in the police department with [actor] George Eads, and George actually took Justin under his wing."
Why did the veteran "CSI" actor feel that Biebs was worthy of his mentorship? "George said that when he was just starting out, Tom Selleck took him under his wing, so I think he tried to return that kindness, and he really had some time to work the material," she explained. "We built in some time, and I thought that scene was really good, and Justin had a couple of scenes where he didn't have a lot of dialogue or no dialogue and then two pretty heavy scenes."
Noting that Bieber did a "really good job" with the heavier work, Mendelsohn added that Bieber has some acting chops. "It's hard for any accomplished, mature actor to come on the set and fall right into character and do your work, so kudos to Justin," she said.

'Waiting For Superman' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

We present the facts about this incisive education-themed documentary from Oscar winner Davis Guggenheim so you don't have to cram. By Kara Warner

Students in "Waiting for Superman"

Photo: Paramount

After his last filmmaking effort, "An Inconvenient Truth," took the Oscar for Best Documentary, director Davis Guggenheim had the bar set rather high for his future projects. He seems to have met the challenge as his latest work, "Waiting for Superman," has been generating awards-show buzz and serious acclaim since it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival early this year. ("Superman" won the fest's Documentary Audience Award.)

MTV News has been following the poignant film, from its start at Sundance to the debut of the first trailer, and even logged some conversation time with Guggenheim. The arresting documentary finally arrived in theaters on Friday (September 24), and we've gathered all the facts you need to know.
First of all, what's all the fuss about? The film takes a long, hard look at the state of America's public school system, following five students in various U.S. cities who are struggling to get a quality education. It also features commentary from several leaders in the education field: philanthropist Bill Gates; Geoffrey Canada, president and CEO of the Harlem Children's Zone in Harlem, New York; and Michelle Rhee, chancellor of the Washington, D.C., public schools.
When the film traveled to Park City, Utah, in January 2010 for Sundance, it was quickly snatched up by Paramount Vantage, becoming the festival's first official sale, days before it even premiered there. "Superman" went on to win the Documentary Audience Award.
Four months later we got our eyes on the first trailer, and three months after that, MTV partnered with the Get Schooled campaign to host a screening of the film for members of various Chicago youth groups
Shortly thereafter, as part of our Fall Movie Preview, we had an insightful chat with Guggenheim about education reform, the reasons MTV viewers should care about their neighborhood schools and what the average person can do to sustain the conversation he hopes to start with this film. Leading up to the film's release, Guggenheim took the film and its important message — joined by Bill Gates and chancellor Rhee of the Washington, D.C., school district — to "The Oprah Winfrey Show."
This week, MTV News hit up the Los Angeles premiere of "Waiting for Superman" on the famed Paramount lot. There, Guggenheim celebrated with VIPs like "Curb Your Enthusiasm" star Cheryl Hines and L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
"This movie has got to be a catalyst for real change," Villaraigosa said. "It's got to do for education what 'An Inconvenient Truth' did for climate change and the struggle to educate people about global warming. This is the pre-eminent challenge facing America. It is the civil-rights issue of our time. When you look at the kids in urban schools, the level with which they're dropping out and the abysmal success rate of our urban public schools."
On the lighter side of things, but still in the spirit of "Superman," we made a list of our favorite fictional schools over at the MTV Movies Blog, where Hogwarts and "Back to the Future" 's Hill Valley earned nods.
What's your opinion on the education issues raised by "Waiting for Superman"? We want to hear what you think in the comments!

'Breaking Dawn' Casts Maggie Grace As Irina

'Lost' and 'Taken' actress will play a 'vegetarian' vampire who turns on the Cullens.By Kara Warner

Maggie Grace

Photo: Katy Winn/ Getty Images

With production set to begin very soon, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1" continues to add members to its already-crowded cast.
Last month we learned that "The Pacific" actor Rami Malek had joined the "Dawn" ranks in the role of Egyptian vampire Benjamin. On Monday (September 27), it was reported that "Lost" and "Taken" actress Maggie Grace has signed on to play "vegetarian" vampire Irina.
A rep from Summit Entertainment confirmed the casting to MTV News, and the original story appeared first on Deadline.com.
So who is Irina? Those familiar with Stephenie Meyer's source material will recall that she is a member of the Denali coven, one of the only other "vegetarian" vampire covens and allies with the Cullens — that is, until Irina blames the family for the death of her former lover, Laurent, and vengefully reveals a Cullen family secret to the Volturi.
The other "Dawn" newbie, Benjamin, is a member of the Egyptian coven who comes to help Bella and the Cullens battle the Volturi. Benjamin is a young vamp blessed with the special ability of controlling the elements (à la Storm from X-Men), though he has yet to fully master his powers.
"I think it's going to be great," Rami told "ET" of his joining the cast last month. "It's going to be super exciting, and I'm thrilled."
Summit announced in June that "Breaking Dawn" would be divided into two parts; the first of the two films is scheduled to hit theaters November 18, 2011, and the second on November 16, 2012.
Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1."

Lauren Conrad's Road Back To Reality TV

After time off to build her empire — books, fashion lines, cosmetics contracts and more — 'The Hills' star is ready to make another MTV hit.By Jocelyn Vena

Lauren Conrad

Photo: Jordan Strauss/ Getty Images

Since she left "The Hills" in 2009, Lauren Conrad seemed to welcome her time away from the spotlight. But in a surprise move last week, she announced plans to return to MTV in a new docu-series about launching her latest fashion line. So what brought about LC's change of heart?
Although the reality starlet had popped up as a guest judge on "America's Next Top Model" and made one last appearance on the "Hills" finale aftershow in July, she was in no hurry to begin documenting her life again for public consumption. Instead, she focused on other projects, including a clothing line with Kohl's called LC Lauren Conrad and two novels, "L.A. Candy" and "Sweet little Lies." The third in the series, "Sugar and Spice," comes out next week, as does her fashionista guide, "Lauren Conrad Style."

Earlier this year, when we asked her about returning to television, LC was hesitant, saying that her plate was already full. And it was a sentiment she had previously shared when we caught up with her in June '09, shortly after she walked away from her hit MTV show.
"I wouldn't do a show like 'The Hills,' " she told MTV News at the time. "Nothing with my personal life, but possibly something hosting. I think I have a little bit of time to figure out what I'm going to do next."
Over time, however, it seems LC was softening to the idea. In February, she said that while she wasn't ready to make the leap back to the small screen, she wouldn't rule out behind-the-scenes opportunities.
"The only other thing I'd love to do right now is producing," she explained. "I'm just kind of looking for the perfect project because I think the first thing I do I really have to love, so I want to wait until I really have enough time to commit to a series."
That project turned out to be her own documentary series, which will put her back in front of the camera. "I am so excited to be rejoining the MTV family," Lauren said in a statement about her new TV venture. "The new project will follow me as I develop my new contemporary line and also touch on my other businesses."
At least LC has one great lesson she learned from her previous forays into reality TV. "I didn't learn a thing! I'm the same as I went in," she joked back in July. "I learned not to take yourself seriously!"
Are you excited that LC is returning to MTV in her own show? Tell us in the comments!

Ne-Yo Calls Potential Lady Gaga Collabo 'Intriguing'

'Would I jump into her world? Would I pull her into mine?' he says to MTV News.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash

Ne-Yo

While Lady Gaga has worked with everyone from RedOne and Akon to Teddy Riley and Rodney Jerkins, she sticks to a pretty tight-knit group of collaborators when it comes to her albums, including the forthcoming Born This Way. But that doesn't mean singer/songwriter Ne-Yo hasn't been trying to get in the studio with the "Bad Romance" songstress.

"We've been talking to Gaga's people about some stuff," he said. "Gaga's very difficult to get a hold of as of late, for obvious reasons. She's very busy. We've been talking to her people about doing some stuff."
Ne-Yo is best known for working with artists like Rihanna and Beyoncé and crafting pop-influenced R&B tunes. So how would he apply his hitmaking formula to the dance queen's music? "I have no idea! That's kind of the intriguing thing that I have no idea what that song would sound like," he said. "Like, would I jump into her world? Would I pull her into mine? I don't know, but I feel like it would be interesting to see. Maybe we should get a camera crew over when that happens."
While a Gaga collabo isn't a sure thing, Ne-Yo has confirmed that he's working with Beyoncé on her next album.
"The thing about working with Beyoncé is that she definitely has her own agenda," the "Irreplaceable" songwriter said. "She's an artist that knows exactly what she wants to do.
"She's going to give you directions [like] 'Here's where I'm going, so here's where I need you to be,' " Ne-Yo explained. "And, you know, I'm a person that follows direction well. [And she'll be like], 'So this is the sound, this is the vibe; make it happen.' And I write and she likes it or she doesn't. And in this case she did, and there you have it."

Shia LaBeouf Raves About 'Wall Street' Director Oliver Stone

'In the '80s and '90s, he was the most dangerous filmmaker alive,' LaBeouf tells MTV News.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Shia LaBeouf

Photo: MTV News

Shia LaBeouf has had a pretty slick Hollywood run over the past few years. From "Transformers" to "Indiana Jones" and now "Wall Street," he's tackled roles in iconic American franchises and worked with some of the industry's most desirable directors.

Speaking of which, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" teams LaBeouf with Oscar winner Oliver Stone. When we caught up with the young star recently, we asked him if he was a die-hard fan of Stone's original "Wall Street."
"In the '80s and '90s, [Oliver Stone] was the most dangerous filmmaker alive," LaBeouf said. "It's wild. His maturation has softened him now, but at least in the movies that are in that box set, you not only [get] entertainment, but you also get outrageous information. There's an education process. How many directors do you know have college courses based on them in film schools? It says something about him."
In comparing the very recognizable and iconic Gordon Gekko (played by Michael Douglas) to the memorable main characters in "Transformers" and "Indiana Jones," LaBeouf said Gekko trumps Indy and Max.
"He's got more bite, he's more dangerous, he's the most dangerous of the three," LaBeouf said. "Also the most interesting, I think. There's something in how tangible and visceral it is," he explained of the topical subject matter within "Wall Street." "Whereas the other films are fantasy films where the suspension of disbelief is necessary for you to get into the movie. This isn't that. It's a very tangible world, and you're living in the midst of the twilight of American economic dominance, and it's real and it's the topic of every conversation. Unemployment really is hovering at 10 percent, we really are in trouble. When it's real, there's more to chew on — not just for the actors, but also easier to get the audience in."
Are you excited to see "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"? Do you agree with LaBeouf's statement that Gordon Gekko is more memorable/dangerous than Indiana Jones? Tell us in the comments!

Kanye West And Jay-Z Are 'So Appalled' On New Track

'Ye also drafts Swizz Beatz, RZA, Pusha T and Cyhi Da Prynce for latest G.O.O.D. Friday track.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Another Friday, another Kanye West-helmed all-star collabo.
The hip-hop superstar's latest weekly offering, "So Appalled," continues his trend of packing a varied cast of big-name stars onto a single record. This week, 'Ye recruited G.O.O.D. Music signee Pusha T, fellow MC/producer Swizz Beatz and rap luminary Jay-Z for repeat guest spots. Wu-Tang Clan ringleader RZA follows in the footsteps of Wu member Raekwon by dropping a G.O.O.D. Friday verse and newcomer Cyhi Da Prynce makes an appearance.
'Ye tweeted Friday evening (September 24) that, unlike his recent free track "Lord Lord Lord," which surfaced Saturday morning, G.O.O.D. Friday followers could expect a new song to kick off the weekend. "Good Friday actually coming on time this week!" he wrote. "We do this for our culture!"
"So Appalled" also differs from the soulful instrumentation and introspective lyricism of "Lord" on several fronts. Accompanied by gruesome artwork of a nude woman splayed on a white surface with blood streaming from her mouth, the song has a testy, restless vibe with midtempo rhythms and ominous shuddering strings.
Swizzy sets the track's tone with ad-libs such as "one hand in the air, if you don't really care" as West follows with bars like "We above the law, we don't give a f--- 'bout y'all/ I got dogs that'll chew a f---ing hole through the wall."
Jay takes jabs at ankle-biting MCs, launching his verse with, "How should I begin this?/ I'm just so offended/ How am I even mentioned by these f---in' beginners?/ I'm so appalled/ I might buy the mall/ Just to show n---as how much more I have in store." Hov spends most of his bars deconstructing the hate that surrounds outsize fame but poses the question, "Would you rather be underpaid or overrated?"
Push is up next with his own views on reaching the top, spitting, "Success is what you make it/ Take it how it come/ A half a mill in 20s like a billion where I'm from."
Cyhi holds his own among an intimidating roster of established MCs with lines like "If God had an iPod, I'd be on his playlist" and "Thou shalt not hate, kid/ My movement is like the civil rights, I'm Ralph David/ Abernathy, so call my lady Rosa Parks/ I am nothing like them n---as, baby those are marks."
RZA comes right in as Cyhi steps back, nearly clipping the end of his verse with bellows of "f---in' ridiculous" riding out the track with rhymes like "Cars for the Mrs. and furs for the mistress/ You know that sh-- is f---in' ridiculous."
How do you like Kanye West's "So Appalled"? Let us know in the comments!

Stone Temple Pilots Reunited In Hopes Of Opening For Led Zeppelin, Bassist Says

'If time allows, there will definitely be new music,' Robert DeLeo adds of STP's future.By Chris Harris

Stone Temple Pilots' Robert DeLeo and Scott Weiland

Photo: Charley Gallay/ Getty Images

There are a number of reasons why Stone Temple Pilots decided to reunite after nearly five years apart — some are obvious, and others, not so much.
Of course, the financial windfall of reviving the grunge stalwarts for an extensive U.S. tour was too good to pass up, and bassist Robert DeLeo readily admits as much. And then there are the fans, the ones who had been with STP since the very beginning as well as those who discovered the band only after it first split back in 2003 and who, woefully, have yet to catch the Pilots live.
On a more personal level, though, Stone Temple Pilots' resurrection was purely selfish, and very much an anticipatory (not to mention optimistic) move on the band's part: If, after the months and months of rumors and denials, there ever is a full-on Led Zeppelin reunion tour, STP wanted to be ready to offer their services as an opening act.
"Believe me, that was one of the reasons," laughed DeLeo. "We thought, 'We should get together now, in case Zeppelin does tour.' I'm serious, man. That would be one hell of a bill: STP and Led Zeppelin. I mean, we could play a doghouse, out in the middle of the ocean, and if I got to play with Zeppelin, that would be a highlight of my life."
Yes, DeLeo — and the rest of the band — had several reservations about raising STP from the dead — a feat DeLeo jokingly referred to as "Mission Impossible." For the band's members, the idea of regrouping was terrifying at first, but with time, the boys settled their differences and tried to think positive.
"For me, it was about putting down some of the things that I was used to getting bitten by," explained the bassist — who, with guitar-playing brother Dean DeLeo, has been collaborating with Peter Frampton on material for his next LP. "After you get bitten, it's hard to go back. I wanted to go into this with an open frame of mind and a positive attitude and just have fun with it. We should have fun with it, which God knows we didn't always have with our career when we were younger. If that's all I can say, and that's what I can get out of this reunion, great.
"I think I speak for all of us when I say there's a lot of unfinished business that we didn't get around to the first go," he continued. "Enough time has gone by, and it feels really good to be back. I don't really want to put too much thought into how it feels — I'm just kind of going with it and keeping a good positive attitude about it. I just needed to get over the things that we all needed to get over, and that's been working so far. If everyone shows up and does this thing, I think it's going to be really amazing."
DeLeo claims that during recent rehearsals, STP were "sounding as good as ever," and he credits sobriety as part of the reason the band's in tip-top shape.
"My brother's going on four years of sobriety," he said. "We have a lot more clarity in the band now, and I think with clarity comes appreciation. I saw that the other night, when we played [a secret gig in Los Angeles]. I saw it in my eyes, and in the eyes of the rest of the band. There's a lot more rock in this band now."
As for an STP record, DeLeo is not 100 percent sure that's going to happen. The goal for STP over the next few weeks, he said, is to reacquaint themselves with their songbook and prepare for their return to the road. Once the band is back in that mindset, the bassist said new STP material is very possible.
"I've always got stuff written, and there's always a long list of songs that are always there — it's a matter of timing," DeLeo said. "If time allows, there will definitely be new music. I think it would be silly not to release new music. I'd like to believe we still have a writing relationship, but the first step is getting reacquainted with what we know."
While STP were on hiatus, frontman Scott Weiland teamed up with Velvet Revolver, and the DeLeo brothers joined forces with Filter's Richard Patrick for Army of Anyone — who are now on hiatus after releasing a poorly received self-titled LP. Does DeLeo foresee an AOA reunion somewhere down the line?
"You never know," he said. "It's just like STP — I didn't know if I was going to return. Whether we get back together and do anything, I think we made a great record, bottom line. That's all that matters to me. If we make another one, I want to make sure it's great, and that applies to STP and anything I do. But I was pretty heartbroken over [the feeble response to AOA's album]."

Usher's VMA-Nominated 'OMG' Inspired By '80s Sci-Fi Character

Director Anthony Mandler wanted to let R&B superstar take viewers 'on a journey, not a ride.'By Jayson Rodriguez

Usher in "OMG"

For a video as forward-thinking as Usher's "OMG" -- with its laser beams and light flashes -- director Anthony Mandler actually looked back for inspiration.
"The original idea was kind of Max Headroom," Mandler told MTV News, citing the animated science-fiction character from '80s British TV. "That's where it came from — the TV flickering on and there's this character. We just wanted to bring it up to date."

"Max Headroom was always in his room," he continued, "this unidentifiable room, '80s shapes. I used that for inspiration."
The formula worked: "OMG" is among the Best Male Video nominees for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The clip is up against Drake's "Find Your Love," Jason Derülo's "In My Head," Eminem's "Not Afraid" and B.o.B's "Airplanes." Mandler is a multiple nominee, having also helmed Drake's video.
"OMG" is the first time Usher and Mandler — who has worked with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and Rihanna — collaborated on a project.
Usher said he knew the video would be a challenge and wanted to make sure the director was up to the task.
"When I first shot the song to him, I was like, 'Are you sure you're gonna be able to catch this one?' And he said, 'I got it,' " Usher explained.
"We wanted to bring Will.I.Am (the song's producer) into my world," he continued. "Obviously, the international sound and look and feel has already been set, but we wanted to do something theatrical, fun and energetic to show us working off of each other and playing off of each other as artists, but the cinematography would be artistic and incredible."
Mandler described the visuals as "Hitchcock-ian." Though the style of the shot was important to the director, he had a simpler goal in mind: to capture Usher in his element. He said the key to the clip was simply letting Usher's talent take over.
"The concept was to create a world where we put Usher in a space where he does what I think he does better than anyone else in the world, which is perform at a level and magnitude of a superstar and take us, the viewer, whether audible or visually, on a journey, not a ride," the director said. "And, in that, I wanted to create an unpredictability, so one set leads to another and another, and you never know what's gonna happen. Along the way, Usher becomes our guide. We're so focused on him, we don't notice the change. The thing is unfolding little by little, and you can't quite see far enough ahead to know what's gonna come next."
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12.

Beyonce Has An 'Agenda' For New Album, Ne-Yo Says

'She knows exactly what she wants to do,' Ne-Yo says of Bey's Sasha Fierce follow-up.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash

Beyoncé may have killed off Sasha Fierce for her next album, but that doesn't mean that whatever she turns out won't be just as, dare we say, fierce as her previous effort. And Ne-Yo, who reveals he is working with the megastar on the follow-up to 2008's I Am ... Sasha Fierce, says that it's easy-peasy working with Bey, mostly because she knows exactly what she wants.
"The thing about working with Beyoncé is that she definitely has her own agenda," the "Irreplaceable" songwriter told MTV News about the hush-hush song (or songs) the pair worked on together. "She's an artist that knows exactly what she wants to do."

Britney Spears' Ex-Bodyguard Defends Lawsuit

Fernando Flores tells TMZ he's 'standing up for what I believe is right.'By Kelley L. Carter

A former bodyguard for pop superstar Britney Spears defended his sexual-harassment lawsuit Thursday (September 9), saying he's "standing up for what I believe is right."
Fernando Flores, the bodyguard who alleged earlier this week that the pop singer repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances toward him and exposed her naked or near-naked body to him, gave a quick interview to TMZ outside his lawyer's Orange County office.
Spears, however, denied the allegations, posting a statement on her website saying that she and her attorneys believed the suit would be dismissed. "This lawsuit is another unfortunate situation where someone is trying to take advantage of the Spears family and make a name for himself," the statement read.
To Spears' statement, Flores told the gossip website "if that's what they think, then that's what they think."
A dollar amount isn't cited in the suit -- which is posted on TMZ -- but Flores is seeking damages based on the sexual-harassment incidents and for "intentional infliction of emotional distress." Flores also alleged in the suit that Spears abused her children. In the suit, he said the 28-year-old had sex and engaged in violent arguments in front of her two young sons.
Sources told TMZ that Flores' accusations of child abuse (including an incident where he says Spears allegedly whipped one of her sons with a belt) were declared without merit by the Department of Children and Family Services.

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray's Trial Set For January

Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death.By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Toby Canham/ Getty Images

More than a year after Michael Jackson's death, the pop icon's former personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, was in court Monday (August 23) where a judge finally set a preliminary date of January 4, 2011, in the cardiologist's involuntary-manslaughter trial.
TMZ reported that Murray's legal team won a request to get a fluid sample from Jackson as part of their defense strategy questioning the accuracy of levels of the surgical anesthetic propofol found in Jackson's body. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office determined that Jackson, 50, died as a result of acute propofol intoxication.
Murray has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter and has admitted to giving Jackson propofol, a strong anesthetic usually used during surgery but allegedly employed by chronic insomniac Jackson as a sleep aid. Murray's lawyers have said the physician did not administer any drugs that "should have" caused Jackson's death. The investigation into his death was equally lengthy, lasting more than eight months, after which Los Angeles prosecutors charged that Murray gave the King of Pop a lethal combination of propofol and other painkillers and sedatives in the hours before the singer was found dead in his rented Los Angeles mansion on June 25, 2009. Murray faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
After hearing from both sides in the case at the January court date, the judge, Michael Pastor, will determine if there is enough evidence to mount a full trial.
Jackson's mother and father, Katherine and Joseph, were in court on Monday, according to Radar Online, sitting in the front row as Judge Pastor set the preliminary hearing date. Pastor granted a protective order covering all evidence in the criminal case, meaning it cannot be released to anyone other than the lawyers, paralegals and investigators in the case.
Murray's defense team reportedly asked for access to three fluids collected by the coroner's office, including ones taken from syringes and an IV tube to re-examine test results. Pastor ruled that the coroner's office must preserve the samples, and if defense attorneys and prosecutors cannot agree on the request, he will schedule a hearing on the matter.
After court let out, a group of Jackson supporters gathered and sang an impromptu verse that featured the lines, "Conrad Murray is a cold man," while holding up signs that read "Justice for Michael Jackson" and "Love Unites Us, Peace Drives Us, Judgment Day 4 All."

'Catfish' Subject Is A 'Bit More Wary' When It Comes To The Web

Nev Schulman now understands where taking risks 'can lead when it comes to the Internet.'By Kara Warner

Nev Schulman

Photo: MTV News

The much-buzzed-about little indie that could, "Catfish," is finally in theaters. Despite the unusual approach Universal took with the marketing campaign — i.e., setting up the Sundance darling as a genre or horror-like film — it is a must-see movie with a very timely and unique message.

The heavily hyped documentary revolves around NYC-based photographer Nev Schulman and a series of curious events that occur when he begins an online friendship with an 8-year-old girl and a romantic relationship with her older sister.
When MTV News caught up with the filmmakers, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, they addressed the persistent "is it real?" debate. A few weeks later, we had the opportunity to sit down with all three of the "Catfish" guys: the filmmakers and the movie's star/subject, Nev Schulman.
Because the film exposes a very real and, at times, emotional real-life experience related to the realm of online relationships and social networking, we asked Nev if he has since changed his virtual presence or approach (without revealing any spoilers, of course).
"Through all of this, basically, I'm trying to stay true to my regular behavior," Schulman said. "I like to take risks, putting myself out there, saying yes to things. I have certainly a new appreciation for where that can lead when it comes to the Internet," he explained. "So when it comes to meeting new people online, I'm definitely a little bit more wary now as far as getting to know them too personally before I actually meet with them in person, but as far as using the Internet and Facebook and Twitter and YouTube and having accounts on all these social-networking websites, I think it's great. I think that there's a lot of good that can come from it."
Nev Schulman added that until you really know someone, it's best to err on the private side of things. At least in the beginning of a virtual relationship — no matter if it's platonic or romantic.
"Basically, what it comes down to is, keep it private, because you can always share with people once you're ready to, but there's no reason to willy-nilly share everything about yourself with anybody."

30 Seconds To Mars, Ke$ha Plan Big VMA Arrivals

Can this year's nominees rival the elephants and yachts of years past?By James Montgomery

30 Seconds to Mars

Photo: Myriam Santos/ Kayda

For much of the past decade, the MTV Video Music Awards has really been two shows: The one where they hand out the Moonmen, and the one that occurs on the red carpet, where the stars try their very best to outdo each other with over-the-top arrivals.
From yachts to 18-wheel trucks, elephants to horse-drawn carriages, how you arrive at the VMAs has become just as important as whether you take home an award. As you can probably imagine, sometimes, things get a little crazy.
"Usually, artists don't let us know [how they're arriving] until the last minute, which makes things interesting," Video Music Awards Pre-Show executive producer Ryan Kroft told MTV News. "A lot of times, they'll want to do things like land a hot-air balloon on the carpet, or drive a car down the carpet, but generally, the fire marshal frowns on those kinds of things, so we have to tell them 'no.' "
Still, there are plenty of ideas that do get the green light, and they're just as epic as the stars that thought them up. And this year's VMA arrivals are no different, though for aesthetic reasons, they're slightly scaled back.
"In New York, we had stars arriving on a fire truck, a double-decker bus, but that wouldn't play this year," Kroft said. "The carpet is designed to look like the stars are arriving at a Hollywood Hills mansion — white, chrome, glass — so having someone arrive with a marching band would seem somewhat out of place."
But there are big arrivals nonetheless: One of the biggest involves 30 Seconds to Mars, who have already started touting their entrance as being thoroughly crazy.
"30 Seconds to Mars are recreating a scene from their 'Kings and Queens' video," Kroft explained. "They'll have an army of bicyclists arriving with them, and they'll be riding bikes themselves. Most of the bicyclists are from the video."
Going equally big is Ke$ha, who has a few surprises ready for the VMA carpet. We don't want to give it all away, but here's what we can reveal: "Ke$ha has big plans for the carpet. I can't talk about all of them, but she is arriving in a Delorean, which she got herself," Kroft said. "It'll be like 'Back to the Future.' "
And, in keeping with grand tradition, there are still plenty of stars who haven't said how they're going to be arriving — Jay Sean is planning something "big and sexy," Soulja Boy Tell'em has some swaggadocious plans in the works, and Bruno Mars is still plotting, too — and then, there's Lady Gaga, who ... well, you never know what she'll do.
"We still don't know what some people are doing," Kroft laughed. "The only way you'll know is to tune in to the VMA Pre-Show and watch."
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

Rihanna is making hit songs, breaking records and taking names. The singer is currently tied with a few of her pop comrades for the most #1 songs on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart. She ties with Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Mariah Carey for the most #1's in the Nielsen survey. Rihanna now has six #1's on her résumé thanks to her chart-topping collaboration with Eminem, "Love the Way You Lie," according to Billboard.com.
Rihanna's other #1 songs on the pop chart include 2006's "SOS" (for one week); 2008's "Take a Bow" (for three weeks); 2008's "Disturbia" (three weeks); her late-2008 T.I. collabo "Live Your Life" (two weeks); and this year's "Rude Boy" (two weeks). "Love the Way You Lie" has been on top for one week so far.
Earlier this year Beyoncé and Lady Gaga tied Mariah Carey for six #1 pop songs with their collaboration, "Telephone." Carey had six songs hit #1 on the Hot 100 before the Pop Songs chart was created in 1993, and then six others since its creation. Meanwhile, Beyoncé collected hers from 2003 to 2010. Gaga was the fastest to tie the record, with all six released from 2009-2010.
Avril Lavigne, Pink, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake all come in a close second with five #1 pop songs in their careers.
Rihanna had fans talking last week when the video for "Love the Way You Lie" was released. The singer, who was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009, appears in the video that depicts a violent love affair between Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox.
How do you think Rihanna compares to the other women at the top of the pop chart? Sound off in the comments.

Although the MTV Video Music Awards aren't until Sunday, a slew of VMA-themed concerts featuring Ke$ha, B.o.B and others will take over Los Angeles in the days leading up to the big show.
Sean Kingston kicks things off Thursday night (September 9) with the Verizon Club Night Concert Event at Hollywood's Playhouse, where Jermaine Dupri will also be spinning. On Friday night, Jason Derülo and Never Shout Never will take the Music Box stage at a concert sponsored by Taco Bell and Feed the Beat.
On Saturday night, "Rock Band 3" and FreeCreditScore.com will present the 2010 MTV VMA Concert to Benefit Lifebeat — The Music Industry Fights AIDS, featuring VMA nominees Ke$ha and B.o.B. The "Tik Tok" singer said she is honored to play a show benefiting such an important cause. "It's really awesome that MTV can bring together incredible musicians over VMA weekend, not only to entertain, but to make a difference," she said. "The world of celebrity is a funny game, although it's a great feeling to have the opportunity to use my fame for a good cause helping those in need."
B.o.B is equally excited to perform for a good cause: "The road to the VMAs has been a wild one. I'm glad to be taking time the night before the big show to support a great organization. Lifebeat's message of HIV prevention is an important one for young people, and I am honored to join them in the fight."
Tickets for the Ke$ha and B.o.B event, with all proceeds going to Lifebeat, are available at Lifebeat.org.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

TRAILER: Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in ?The Fighter? (video)

Here's a brand new trailer for Paramount's "The Fighter," the boxing drama directed by David O. Russell that stars Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. It's yet another variation on bruiser brothers duking it out both in and out of the ring (see: "Raging Bull") with loserdom always hovering outside the ropes.

Lindsay Lohan Admits To Failing Drug Test

'I am a work in progress,' the actress tweets.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Lindsay Lohan has admitted to failing her recent drug test. Hours after reports surfaced on Friday that Lohan didn't pass her latest test, the troubled starlet conceded she was still struggling with addiction.
"Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test and if I am asked, I am prepared to appear before judge Fox next week as a result," Lohan tweeted late Friday night. "Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away over night. I am working hard to overcome it and am taking positive steps forward every day. I am testing every single day and doing what I must do to prevent any mishaps in the future. "
The actress, who was outfitted with an alcohol-monitoring bracelet in May which later went off at a party, and sent to jail in July for violating her probation, insisted she was ready to deal with the outcome of the failed drug test.
"This was certainly a setback for me but I am taking responsibility for my actions and I'm prepared to face the consequences," Lohan wrote.
After wrapping up 13 days in prison and roughly three weeks in rehab, the actress was required to submit to random drug and alcohol tests, among other requirements, in order to avoid more jail time. According to the conditions of her post-rehab release, the actress could return to prison for 30 days if she fails a drug and alcohol test.
Lohan's recent missives appear to have a more contrite tone than statements she made about her personal drama before her July prison stint. The starlet told Vanity Fair in a pre-jail interview that her situation wasn't as dire as perceived.
"If I were the alcoholic everyone says I am, then putting a [SCRAM] bracelet on would have ended me up in detox, in the emergency room, because I would have had to come down from all the things that people say I'm taking and my father says I'm taking — so that says something, because I was fine," Lohan said.
On Friday, Lohan said she appreciated the fan support and conceded she is still grappling with her substance abuse issues.
"I am so thankful for the support of my fans, loved ones and immediate family, who understand that i am trying hard, but also I am a work in progress, just as anyone else," Lohan wrote. "I am keeping my faith, and I am hopeful."

Kanye West Fans Aren't Seeing Eye To Eye On 'See Me Now'

Fan reaction to the MC's Beyoncé-featuring single ranges from 'wack' to ' 'Ye is back!!!!'By Mawuse Ziegbe

Fans agree that Kanye West is back, but they can't seem to agree on how they feel about that. The MC unveiled his latest single, "See Me Now," on Wednesday, and since then, Kanye followers have being going back and forth about whether the track is on fire or a fail.
The song, which features soulful contributions from Beyoncé and Charlie Wilson, is expected to appear on his upcoming untitled album, but, for many, the song takes things back to the MC's debut, College Dropout.
"Wow, it reminds me of College Dropout. Good to hear 'Ye laugh!" Ezekiel wrote on West's Kanye UniverseCity blog.
Bryan C.G. agreed: "This totally feel like your Dropout days. I love it."
Some fans, such as Prolifik, are all about 'Ye reviving the strings-laden throwback soul that kicked off his recording career. "Amazing! Classic flow, classic beats," the fan wrote. "I miss that old College Dropout steez! Welcome back, 'Ye."
" 'Ye is back!!!!" Tiffany wrote. "Hip Hop needs you so much!! You're brilliant."
While lots of online commenters are feeling the song, some of the MC's fans aren't seeing the appeal of "See Me Now." "This song is hot garbage," Luis Ariza declared on West's Facebook page.
The Facebook post announcing the song scored more than 580 "likes" at press time, however, some fans were not on the "See Me Now" bandwagon. "[It's the] first song from Kanye that I have not liked," Ariza wrote.
"This song needs major work," Real Talk proclaimed on West's blog. "I want harder beats and to be able to move my feet."
Chad Jones also chimed in on Facebook: "Not feelin it. Huge Kanye fan and love the evolution in his music but the track is wack. Lyrics are nice but track is wack."
" 'Ye is the man, but this song is WEAK!!!" Wallace Leeth wrote.
Jay Yey Couture thought the G.O.O.D. Music lyricist was upstaged by fellow superstar Beyoncé and undermined by the instrumental. "Kanye will sell this fall, that's for sure. However Beyoncé made this song!!!!!" the fan typed. "Kanye had too much time to come with ... this [weak] beat ... he could have did wayyyyy better."
Yeezy might not have won over all his fans with the single, but he does have the opportunity to redeem himself on the awards-show stage: West will perform at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, which air live September 12 at 9 p.m. The appearance marks his VMA return after a notorious onstage dustup with Taylor Swift, but it appears the rapper is taking the incident in stride. West closes "See Me Now" with the ad lib, "Uncle Charlie, by the way. And I'mma let you finish, but I got Beyoncé on the track."
