One of TV's funniest shows, 30 Rock, celebrates its 100th episode Thursday night with a special hour-long installment (airing at 10 p.m. on NBC) -- and no one is more pleasantly surprised than star and creator Tina Fey. In a new interview with GQ, Fey recalls how she was sure that her NBC show would be canceled after the particularly bizarre season-1 episode "Black Tie."
"When we were on set, we were joking that the episode was called 'Black Tie' but should be called 'Good-bye, America!'" says the comedienne. "We weren't trying to be weird, you know. We wanted people to like the show -- we just didn't know how to do it. We were just like, 'This? Do you like this? Do you like inbred Austrians? No? You don't?'"
Not only did 30 Rock get renewed, it went on to become a critical darling, with 38 Emmy Award nominations so far. It's never been a mega-hit in the ratings, yet it's already been picked up for a sixth season to start this fall.
If you're not already a fan of the show, now would be fine time to meet Liz Lemon: You can start by looking at clips from EW's favorite episodes. And if you already go by Tracy Jordan's creed ("Live every week like it's Shark Week"), you'll get a kick out of Vulture's 100 thoughts on 30 Rock.
While this is a major milestone for the show, Fey isn't stopping to rest on her laurels. She's been busy promoting her new book Bossypants and preparing for a more personal project: her second baby, after daughter Alice, 5. And it sounds like her husband Jeff Richmond is going to need some preparation too.
"My husband was really good about helping out (with the first baby). The problem was diapers," Fey tells GQ. "He never got past the poop."
We bet Tracy Jordan would have some words of wisdom about that problem. Maybe even on Thursday's episode?
