Jesse James, onetime star of the Discovery Channel's Monster Garage -- but better known as the tattooed cheating husband of america's sweetheart Sandra Bullock -- is now making the rounds to promote his newly released memoir American Outlaw. In an interview with Good Morning America on Wednesday, James opened up about the current state of his relationship with Bullock -- and revealed that he's set to wed new love Kat Von D this summer.
"I think, you know, a marriage ending, all this crazy stuff... that was a lesson to work on myself and fix what's wrong with me," he says in the interview. And so, after a stint in rehab (reportedly for anger management issues), James closed up his motorcycle shop in Los Angeles and along with his children -- Chandler, Jesse Jr. and Sunny -- relocated to Austin, Tex., where Bullock still lives.
Chief among James' reasons for moving there was to be close to Bullock, with whom his children had grown close, and Louis, the now 16-month-old baby boy he and Bullock had adopted and planned to raise together (Bullock is now Louis' sole guardian).
Despite his family's close geographical proximity to Bullock, James says that he's "never seen Louis since everything happened." He adds that his daughter has seen Sandra "a couple of times, but pretty much no contact at all for several months."
He elaborates: "I know why I moved... I moved initially so the kids could keep a relationship and I could kind of keep a relationship with Louis, and then whatever else happened besides that. But I mostly moved for me. To get out of California." James has been quite open about the fact that he misses Louis, and has said that the situation is too painful for him to even write about in his memoir.
"You know, the painful stuff, like with Louis," he sas, "I could only cry so much about him until I have to, like, suck it up and keep a stiff upper lip, and realize, hey, I have three kids that I do have."
And in this respect, James says the move to Austin has been just what the doctor ordered. "It's what I needed," James says. "Where I can finally breathe... I think I was just dad again. And like, eliminated all of the things, that distracted me from being a dad."
Earlier this year, James announced his engagement to L.A. Ink star, Kat Von D, and says he is determined to be faithful to her, something he learned because of the debacle with Bullock. James tells Good Morning America, "I can't worry about (Sandra) anymore. I think I've spent a good chunk of the last five or six years worrying only about her, and what she thinks, and what I should do... controlling all my movements and everything else."
