Portia de Rossi: "I Didn't Think I Was Crazy to Only Eat 300 Calories a Day"

Portia de Rossi: "I Didn't Think I Was Crazy to Only Eat 300 Calories a Day"

Portia de Rossi has opened up about her frightening struggle with anorexia and bulimia in her new memoir Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain. The actress sat down with Oprah Winfrey earlier this week to talk about her life during that dark period.

Now, de Rossi, 37, is dishing the details with People magazine about when she weighed a shocking 82 pounds and why she no longer wants "to have any more secrets."

De Rossi shared her reaction to seeing a picture of herself (during her time on the show Ally McBeal) when she was at her smallest.  "At the time, I thought, 'Okay, my arms look awful so I should cover them up, but my legs look pretty okay now," she tells People. "I didn't think I was crazy to only eat 300 calories a day. That made perfect sense to me."

The actress -- also known for her work on off-beat shows such as Arrested Development and Better Off Ted -- admits she still struggles with some self-esteem issues. "Look, I don't think I'm perfect," she says. "I still don't like my thighs. But I'm not going to do anything to compromise my health or my sanity to change them." But de Rossi says she's come a long way from her darkest days.

After marrying Ellen DeGeneres in 2008, she says she has now found the inner peace she never had while she was still in the closet and battling her eating disorders.

"My struggle with anorexia, coming to terms with my sexuality, I realized I had struggled with self-acceptance my whole life," she says. "To be able to get to a point where you're just happy with who you are, I think that's when you know what real peace feels like."
