Exec producer Nick Cannon teaming up with Young Money MC to chart his rise in six-part show debuting on April 28.
By Jayson Rodriguez
Nick Cannon and Cory Gunz announced on Monday (January 31) that they'll premiere their new docu-series, "Son of a Gun," this April on MTV.
The long-in-the-works production will follow the latest Lil Wayne protégé's rise to fame with cameras tracking the young Bronx rapper's career; Gunz is managed by his father, veteran Bronx MC Peter Gunz. "Son of a Gun," a six-part series, debuts on Thursday, April 28, at 11 p.m. ET/PT.
"Cory's story is inspiring, one that boldly paints the many trials and tribulations he's had to endure in pursuit of his dreams," executive producer Cannon said in a statement. "I'm grateful for the access that Cory and Peter allowed us to have in order to create a series that we feel will really resonate with MTV viewers."
Before the younger Gunz inked a deal with Weezy's Young Money, the upstart rapper was signed to iconic music industry veteran Tommy Mottola's Casablanca Records. When that union proved to be fruitless, Gunz joined Def Jam Records at Jay-Z's urging.
Back in 2009, Gunz partnered with Cannon and told Mixtape Daily that he and the Nickelodeon exec had plans in place to showcase the young mixtape circuit star's skills.
"Me and Nick got a couple things under wraps," Gunz explained. "We're trying to make a couple big things happen. We're trying to do things real elegant for '09, '10 and beyond. We [got] a couple projects in the works. Nick has been real instrumental behind the scenes on the project. And he's opened a couple of doors for me. Nick is my big brother now, for real. He's opening doors for me, giving me opportunities in and out of the studio. It's about to be ugly."

Beyoncé Knowles is headed back to the big screen and into the familiar territory of playing an aspiring singer-turned-superstar. According to Deadline, Knowles will star in a remake of "A Star Is Born," to be directed and produced by Oscar winner Clint Eastwood for Warner Bros.
The remake will be the fourth telling of the "A Star Is Born" tale, the most memorable in recent years being the 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson as star-crossed lovers of sorts. It is also worth mentioning that the producers of that film, Billy Gerber and Jon Peters, are also attached to this new project. It is said to be a full-on musical with production set to begin sometime in the fall.
Naturally, the plot details are under wraps, but the original story revolves around an aspiring singer who meets and falls in love with a troubled, failing former star who helps get the young ingénue her big break in the business.
No announcements have been made with regard to the male lead, but the report mentioned that major names like Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Hamm have been floated around.
It's definitely an interesting step for Knowles but not necessarily a surprise, given the fact that the majority of her film roles have been as singers ("Cadillac Records," "Dreamgirls," "The Fighting Temptations"). While many thought "Dreamgirls" would bring awards recognition for Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson's supporting role ended up garnering the most attention. With Oscar fave Eastwood at the helm of this new project, Knowles could be in line for some hardware yet.

Singer is musical guest on this weekend's show, hosted by 'Social Network' star Jesse Eisenberg.

Fresh off the debut of her "Moment 4 Life" video, Nicki Minaj is gearing up for another rather momentous event: her appearance as this weekend's musical guest on "Saturday Night Live."
And though it's most definitely happening, Nicki still can't believe it. And she won't, not until she's seen evidence to the contrary. This could prove problematic since, y'know, the show is live and all.
"Being a part of 'Saturday Night Live' feels absolutely incredible. I still don't even believe it's true, I'm not even going to believe it's really happening until — well, I'm going to DVR it, because I can't watch it, because I'll be on it," she told MTV News, laughing. "But until I see it back on DVR, I'm not even going to believe I was really on the show. This is epic, this is monumental, this is historic stuff."
For a girl who grew up in New York (just like this weekend's host, newly minted Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg), performing on "SNL" — a show that's nearly as iconic as the city itself — is a dream come true for Minaj.
"I mean, to be raised in New York, and to always hear about 'SNL,' " she said. "I never had the honor of getting a pinkie toe in the building, now [I'm] here and it feels incredible."
She spent the days leading up to the show filming teaser commercials with Eisenberg and "SNL" castmember Kenan Thompson, and Minaj is taking the same approach when it comes to talking about her performances: She's not revealing much.
But you can probably guess at least one of the songs she'll be doing. "Well, all I can say is that it's going to be a 'Moment 4 Life,' " Minaj smiled.
Do you hope Nicki will be in a skit on "SNL"? Let us know in the comments!

Conrad Murray's trial slated to start March 28.

Dr. Conrad Murray appears in court on Tuesday in Los Angeles, California

Michael Jackson's former personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray entered a plea of not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of the pop star at his arraignment on Tuesday morning (January 25).
According to the Los Angeles Times, when asked by judge Michael Pastor how he pleaded to the charge, Murray said, "Your honor, I am an innocent man." When Pastor interrupted and asked Murray what his plea was, the cardiologist said, "Therefore, I plead not guilty."
The brief hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court ended with Pastor setting a March 28 date for the start of a trial in the case. Murray faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted, and the Times noted that he surprised the judge by invoking his right to a speedy trial, which meant the case would have to begin by late March. Pastor noted the rarity of a defendant asking to have a speedy trial, then set jury selection for the week of March 28 and said he was inclined to allow television coverage of the trial that the defense expects will last two months.
Lawyers for Murray have maintained his innocence all along, saying he did not do anything that "should have" caused the 50-year-old pop icon's death. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office determined that Jackson died of an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol mixed with a cocktail of other sedatives.
Murray has admitted to administering propofol to Jackson in the hours before the singer's death, but the defense appears to be gearing up to claim that it was Jackson who administered the final, fatal dose of the drug after he woke in a panic from a fitful night of sleep.
During a preliminary hearing earlier this month to determine if there was enough evidence to hold Murray over for trial, the physician's attorneys said that there was evidence Jackson injected or drank a fatal amount of the drug when the doctor was not looking.

Cheryl Burke has revealed her passion for dance -- and her enviable hourglass figure -- in nearly every season of Dancing With the Stars. But there's one part of her life that she's kept under wraps until now. According to People, Burke's upcoming memoir Dancing Lessons, out Feb. 8, delves into the painful story of how the dancer was molested as a child -- and how she helped send her abuser to prison.
Burke, 26, was 5 years old when she was first assaulted. The repeat offender was a seemingly friendly neighbor, a retired mailman who would sometimes pick Burke up from school. Being so young, Burke was confused about what was happening, but she came forward when the man was accused of assaulting other children. Burke testified against him in court, but says that she still "felt guilty for wanting his love and affection." She calls speaking up at the trial as "the hardest thing I've ever done."
"I saw his face and lawyers were asking me these questions," Burke remembers, "and I was like, 'What am I doing? Did I even do anything wrong?'"
The man was sentenced to almost two decades in prison. Burke went through years of therapy, until she finally understood how wrong her abuser's actions were -- and how none of it was her fault. Today, she no longer considers the incident a shameful secret, and she wants to encourage other victims to step forward.
"I'm telling my story. They're not secrets," Burke tells People. "There's no shame... If I can help just one person, for me that's all that matters." Burke, a trained ballroom and Latin dancer, is a two-time DWTS champion. She won both mirror ball trophies in 2006: first with partner Drew Lachey in Season 2, and then with partner Emmitt Smith in Season 3. It's unknown if she'll be returning for Season 12 in March, as the dancers don't find out until the celebrities are chosen.

Eddie Cibrian is embarking on a new life with fiance LeAnn Rimes, but is he looking to get a new image to go with it?
A pal of the actor says that Cibrian, 37, has hired an image to consultant to revamp the way the public sees him. Since leaving his wife of eight years, Brandi Glanville, for Rimes, the source says Cibrian has taken a lot of flack.
"He's tired of being portrayed as a philandering sleaze," the insider tells the new issue of Us Weekly.
The image consultant's first suggestion was that Cibrian change his ride. "He made Eddie get rid of his Porsche and buy a Prius."
The hired help also reportedly instructed his new client to get more face time with his two sons, Mason, 7, and Jake, 3 -- preferably in public. "Instead of going to a Lakers game with his buddy," the friends said, "the consultant insisted he bring a son."
Another source close to Cibrian denies that he's looking to change anything.

Cher in "Burlesque"
Photo: Sony Pictures
After the Academy Award nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, "Burlesque" star Cher made it clear she wasn't going to be celebrating with the nominees.
The icon wasn't pleased with the lack of recognition for her Diane Warren-penned tune "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" from the flashy musical, and she took to Twitter to express her frustration. While it was overlooked by the Academy, the "Burlesque" song recently scored a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
"We didn't get a nomination 4 best song ! That sucks ! Diane's song Is so beautiful !" Cher wrote. "It's hard to understand how u win." Then she referred to her Globes win: "The Golden Globe 4 BEST SONG & not even get nominated by the OSCARS? Oh well it is..what it is ,,,,the sun is still shining !"
Baffled by the snub, Cher even contemplated whether it was her role as the song's performer that impacted its Oscar odds, writing, "maybe she would have had a better chance if someone else was singing it ?!! IT JUST CANT B HER SONG I"
The Golden Globes are typically seen as a good forecast for the Oscars, but the awards aren't a guarantee of Oscar love. A handful of stars from Oscar-nominated movies weren't recognized by the Academy, including Mila Kunis ("Black Swan"), Andrew Garfield ("The Social Network") and Julianne Moore ("The Kids Are All Right").
Do you think Cher's "Burlesque" tune deserved an Oscar nomination? Tell us in the comments!

Justin Bieber appears on "CSI"
Photo: CBS
If you were concerned that Justin Bieber snapped and got into a scrap with an overly aggressive photographer, relax, it's just makeup. Images of Bieber with a pretty impressive shiner started zooming around the Internet on Tuesday, but the picture is just a still from the set of "CSI," which the singer will revisit next month.
Bieber, who first appeared on the show in September, tweeted the photo of his makeup-caked black eye on Tuesday along with the message "On set ... where? Let's just say I'm back to my evil ways. #badass."
According to Entertainment Weekly, after getting good notices his first time around, Bieber is set to reprise his role as troubled teen Jason McCann in an upcoming February 17 episode of the crime procedural titled "Targets of Obsession."
The show will air during February sweeps (go figure), six days after Justin's movie debut in his 3-D biopic/concert film, "Never Say Never," which opens in theaters on February 11.
In his first "CSI" appearance, which was Bieber's acting debut, he portrayed a young kid whose older brother had been killed at the end of the previous season. Cops suspected that Bieber's character took out his anger over his brother's death on authority by planting bombs. In his second go 'round, currently being filmed, show regular Nick (George Eads) tips Jason off that he might be in "imminent danger."
Last year, "CSI" executive producer Carol Mendelsohn told MTV News that the teen star would be returning to the show, explaining how the September episode left unanswered questions about his character. "At the end of the episode, we're left with the question: Is Jason a good kid stuck in a bad situation or is Jason a bad kid hiding behind his cuteness?" Mendelsohn said. "You can see why Justin was such a perfect choice to play this role. ... It's an explosive story."
While fans will surely cheer his return to TV, they recently learned that Bieber will not be the subject of an episode of "Glee," as was widely rumored.
After stories began to swirl that Bieber Fever was slated to sweep McKinley High, Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of the Fox hit, cleared things up, explaining the role that the teen star's music would play in an upcoming episode. Murphy maintained that unlike other superstars whose repertories have received "Glee" overhauls — like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Madonna — Bieber's current list of hits isn't long enough to sustain an entire hour of New Directions-helmed numbers.
"Those [tributes] are reserved for artists with big catalogs," he told Entertainment Weekly. "Bieber comes up in episode 13 as a small plot point. Sam [Chord Overstreet] sings a JB song to win Quinn's [Dianna Agron] approval."

Jackson's two oldest children were in bedroom witnessing drama, bodyguard Faheem Muhammed said.
By Gil Kaufman

One of the most shocking revelations to emerge from the first day of testimony in the pretrial hearing of former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray is that as the pop icon lay dying in his rented Los Angeles mansion, cardiologist Murray asked in a panic, "Does anyone know CPR?"
According to CNN, that's what bodyguard Faheem Muhammed said on the stand. Tuesday was the first day of testimony in hearings aimed at determining whether there is enough evidence to try Murray on a felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of the King of Pop.
The hearing is slated to last around two weeks and feature 20 to 30 witnesses, most of whom will be medical professionals. But it was the shocking testimony of Muhammed on Tuesday that grabbed headlines. He said that he and fellow guard Alberto Alvarez walked in on a scene in which Murray was crouched next to the motionless body of Jackson and it appeared that the heart surgeon did not know how to give CPR.
As they waited for paramedics to arrive, Muhammed said Murray stood next to Jackson's bed and asked in a panicked voice if anyone else in the room knew how to administer the life-saving technique.
"I looked at Alberto because we knew Dr. Murray was a heart surgeon, so we were shocked," Muhammed said. When defense attorney Ed Chernoff asked whether Murray was asking for help because he was exhausted after staying up all night administering sleep aids to the chronically insomniac Jackson, Muhammed replied, "The way that he asked it is as if he didn't know CPR." He also said that he never witnessed Murray performing CPR on Jackson before paramedics arrived and that the singer's two oldest children, Prince Michael and Paris, were in their father's bedroom as the drama was unfolding. Among the Jackson family members in court on Tuesday to watch the proceedings were family matriarch Katherine, sister LaToya and brothers Randy and Jackie.
Prosecutor David Walgren referred to Murray's use of "ineffectual" CPR, which included using one hand while Jackson was on a soft bed, which is counter to recommended techniques. Walgren also told the judge in the case that medical experts would testify that Murray took "a number of actions" that "showed an extreme deviation from the standard of care," after being hired to serve as Jackson's personal physician in the lead-up to a series of comeback shows in England.
The prosecutor also claimed that Murray waited at least 21 minutes to call an ambulance after he found Jackson unresponsive. "By all accounts, Michael Jackson was dead in the bedroom at 100 North Carolwood prior to the paramedics' arrival," Walgren said. The Los Angeles County coroner later determined that the singer died of "acute propofol intoxication," saying the overdose of the surgical anesthetic and the combined effects of other sedatives caused his death.
Chernoff has said that Murray administered propofol and other sedatives to Jackson in the hours before the pop star's death, but not in quantities that "should have" caused his death. CNN reported that Murray's defense team hinted that it would argue that Jackson was facing intense pressure over his upcoming 50-date This Is It comeback series of shows at London's O2 Arena and that led to his demands for treatment to help his chronic insomnia.
Also testifying on Tuesday was the director of the shows, Kenny Ortega, who described Jackson as "involved, active, participating" at his final rehearsal, which ended 12 hours before his death. That was very different from the out-of-it singer who could barely make it through rehearsals on June 19, six nights before his death. At a meeting called after Ortega sent Jackson home that night for some rest, the director described a scene in which Murray scolded him for cutting the rehearsal short.
"Dr. Murray told me that this was not my responsibility, and he asked me not to act like a doctor or psychologist," Ortega said. Murray has pleaded not guilty in the case, and according to a recent report, Walgren believes that the doctor's lawyers may claim that Jackson self-administered the final, fatal dose of propofol and essentially killed himself after waking up in a panic from a fitful night of sleep.
Testimony in the case will continue on Wednesday (January 5).

'She is taking risks when it comes to fashion, when it comes to choreography, when it comes to this music,' choreographer Brian Friedman says.

Britney Spears
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage
In Britney Spears' "For the Record" documentary, the pop icon stressed the importance of dance in her life, even saying that she'd be "dead" without it. And on the heels of a new era in music, the singer is ready to take her signature dance skills to a whole new level in the music video for her latest single, "Hold It Against Me," according to choreographer Brian Friedman.
Speaking with MTV's "The Seven," Friedman dished details on rehearsal time, his take on the new tune and his longtime partnership with the entertainer.
"This is a dance video. Rehearsals can get pretty rough," the choreographer said. "We're playing it safe, we're not trying to kill ourselves yet, but as the video comes closer and closer, we'll definitely be hurting our backs. There was a moment while we were rehearsing where I showed Britney a section and it was something I really wanted her to do, and she freaked out. ... It's crazy when you first see something like that, how overwhelming it can be, especially when you haven't been in the [dance] studio for a year."
Despite Ms. Spears' early hesitation, the dance mastermind said it was probably the wrong section of the routine to show her first, revealing that the pop superstar has learned the moves and is "killing it now."
Reports of a new Britney music video leaked in December when the fansite BreatheHeavy.com posted a notice for auditions. "It's been the biggest buzz, you know?" he continued. "There's been a lot of speculation as to when the actual project started and it's been blowing up on my Twitter. People have been asking, 'Are you in rehearsals? Are you in auditions?' and that's the mystery that should be unknown. What we do know is we're in rehearsal studios right now and the video's coming."
How exactly does "Hold It Against Me" fare in comparison to the slew of other dance tunes under Britney's belt? Calling the iTunes chart topper "the hardest dance track that she's ever put out," Friedman said, "It's infectious. The beat gets inside of you, and just when you think you know it, it takes a turn. The song, in particular, is one of my favorite songs I've heard off the bat. I'm really excited about choreographing it."
Spears and Friedman have a long-standing professional relationship, including working together on the pop singer's 2002 dance heavy "Overprotected (Remix)" music video. Later on in his chat with "The Seven," the Illinois native recalled his first encounter with the then-teenager through a mutual friend who was dancing for her at the time. After meeting with the singer, Brian teamed up with her for her Grammy performance.
"From then on, we became friends and she is fun to work with," he gushed. "She's a Southern girl — she's all about having fun and laughing and cracking jokes. I think you can expect the unexpected from Britney. She is taking risks when it comes to fashion, when it comes to choreography, when it comes to this music — she's grown up so much, and she's pushing 30 years old soon, so she's a strong independent woman and I think she wants to show that."

Don't hold it against her, but Britney Spears has a hit on her hands. Her new track, "Hold It Against Me," which was released last week, topped the Billboard Digital Songs chart.
The Dr.Luke/ Max Martin-produced song, the lead single from the singer's yet-untitled March album, sold 411,000 downloads in its first week available for purchase. The debut also means that Spears broke a record. According to Billboard, that is Spears' best sales week for a digital song as well as the largest debut for a woman as a lead artist. She beat out the record previously held by Taylor Swift. In February, Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale" sold 325,000 downloads; incidentally, Swift broke the record previously held by Spears when that track debuted at the top of the charts.
Spears bumps Bruno Mars' "Grenade" to #2; Wiz Khalifa moved up the chart to #3 with "Black and Yellow," followed by Katy Perry's "Firework," which dropped two spots to #4. Other newcomers to the chart include Avril Lavigne's "What the Hell" at #6 and Jay-Z and Kanye West's collaboration, "H.A.M.," at #10. Enrique Iglesias' "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" (#5), the Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)" (#7), Lil Wayne's "6 Foot 7 Foot" (#8) and Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" (#9) round out the top 10.
Spears is also the top seller on iTunes. Last week, when the song was released, Spears immediately jumped to the top of the iTunes charts in 16 countries. "This is absolutely incredible!" her manager Adam Leber tweeted last week about the song's success. "Brit's fans never cease to amaze me."

Clinton is rumored to have a cameo in The Hangover 2, so he might have been getting some acting pointers from Diaz.
