John Mayer Invokes Justin Bieber, Jonas Brothers In Malaria PSA

Singer uses comedy to call attention to serious issue.
By Jocelyn Vena

There's no better way to bring attention to a serious cause than to use some humor. That's the basic idea behind the Malaria No More campaign, which features PSAs with stars including Aziz Ansari, Ed Helms, Orlando Bloom and even John Mayer, who pokes fun at his superstar status and invokes fellow celebs like Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers and the "Twilight" cast in two humorous clips.

In one PSA, Mayer jokes about his wealth. "I'm such an overprivileged prick," the singer/songwriter says in the video, "that I get two mosquitoes in my apartment because I left the window open, and these mosquitoes are driving me crazy. Do you ever have mosquitoes that you can't find in your house? That's one f---ing mosquito, and then you spend the rest of your day complaining to your friends over $6 coffee that a mosquito bit you. I couldn't find the mosquito. That's one mosquito in your $2 million apartment, John Mayer."

The campaign seeks to end malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. "Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease and recent progress shows that malaria's days are numbered — but we need your help," the website says. "Together, we can make malaria no more." It adds that "a child in Africa dies from malaria every 45 seconds — but you can help change that."

In another PSA, Mayer talks about helping children, who make up a majority of the victims of malaria deaths, and he uses some big-name celebs to bring attention to the cause.

He says, "Almost a million people every year die from malaria, and of that number 85 percent die under the age of Justin Bieber. With your help, by buying a malaria net for just $1, we can help, by the end of the year, to get these kids to Bieber. Next year we'll go Jonas Brothers; after that 'Twilight' kids, but baby steps, baby steps. Let's get them to Bieber."

Ciara Gets Busy In The Bathroom + Sherri Shepherd Debuts "The Newlywed Game"

Ciara doesn't need an office to conduct her business.  She can get it popping in the bathroom.  See what biz she was handling in the powder room, plus get the deets on her album and Sherri Shepherd's new game show "The Newlywed Game" inside....

An aspiring singer auditioned for Ciara right in the middle of the ladies' room at Lord & Taylor during a party benefiting VH1's Save the Music Foundation.  The foundation's students performed on several different floors as Ciara was ushered from floor to floor.  When Ciara noticed an upset student who really wanted to perform for her, a witness reports, "Ciara took her into a nearby bathroom for a one-on-one performance of 'Over the Rainbow.

Ciara then offered the youngster some words of wisdom.  No info on whether the student will make the cut of Ciara's new album Basic Instinct.

And about the album...for fans who think Ciara got glam and changed her style, as she said in the "Gimme Dat" video, she's back to take her self-claimed "crown".

"I got to the point where I was like 'where are my sneakers? I haven't worn my sneakers in a while!' It's a lot of elements that I had in the beginning but at the same time I'm showing my growth. Most importantly I want my fans to walk away satisfied and this album is all about them."

After the low sales of her last effort, Fantasy Ride, it makes sense that Ciara would go back to the old but keep bringing the new.

"As a woman my perspective on things has grown tremendously," Ciara says. "The way that I look at things, the way that I approach them, my confidence is stronger than ever. With this [album] it's about me trusting my basic instinct. I'm at a place in my career when I can really trust my first gut feeling just with everything. That's another thing that is also been a part of me evolving as a woman and as an artist over the years, I'm way more comfortable in my environment now.

I'm [more] comfortable in my skin. A lot of [my confidence is] natural but at the same time in the music industry it can be very aggressive, you gotta' be prepared you know? It kinda' forces you to grow up faster than if I was doing a normal 9-5. It's a really, really aggressive world within music and I feel like that has helped me to grow as well."

Ciara is keeping the guest list to a minimum this time.  Aside from the Dream and Ludacris, it's all about her developing as a woman and artist.

"The beauty of music is that it allows you to express yourself and paint a picture. I've really approached things differently than I did with a lot of my records. I let Dream also be a part of laying my foundation and I 'm not afraid to say that because anybody will tell you that the way that I've written my records over the years is definitely different than the way that I've approached these records.

I wanted fresh energy and having Tricky and Dream, and Dream in particular, allowed some of the lyrics to be a little bit different than in my past. So he may make a story from something that I'm going through, [some of the music] was definitely [from] some personal experiences, some things that happen around me...things that inspire me. I get inspired from many different places. It just depends on the day."

Ciara's new album Basic Instinct drops on December 14.

Fans of Sherri Shepherd can catch her in the daytime twice this fall. "The View" co-host will also host  "The Newlywed Game" for its fourth season on the GSN channel in November.

"Who does not love `The Newlywed Game'?" Sherri asked.  "I've been a fan since I was young, when my grandma would have soap operas on one TV and `Newlywed Game' on another."

Production on "The Newlywed Game" is moving from Los Angeles to New York, where Sherri also tapes ABC's "The View." She said she doesn't foresee any problem balancing work on the two daily shows and sees "The Newlywed Game" as providing a welcome change.

"I love to work. If I'm not working, I'm going to get pregnant," joked Sherri, who has a 5-year-old son. I get to have fun. I'm not going to be arguing with anybody about whether we should pull the troops out of Afghanistan."

A very busy chick, she is also completing work on One for the Money, a film starring Katherine Heigl and based on the Janet Evanovich novel, and will be back on NBC's "30 Rock" in the recurring role of feisty Angie Jordan, wife of her good friend Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan).

"The Newlywed Game," first debuted in the 1960s with host Bob Eubanks, gives three couples the chance to win prizes by showing how much each knows about their new spouse.

Justin Bieber's 3-D Movie Trailer Debuts

'That sort of 'never say never' idea is conveyed in the trailer,' director Jon Chu tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

On Monday (October 25), at his My World Tour stop in Los Angeles, Justin Bieber debuted the trailer for his highly anticipated 3-D flick "Never Say Never," due Valentine's Day weekend 2011.

The trailer was filled with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with some of the people important in Bieber's life, including mentor Usher and manager Scott "Scooter" Braun. When MTV News spoke with the film's director, Jon Chu, he said that if Bieber's fans were tempted by what they saw in the trailer, they should love the film when it hits their local theater.

"We talked about the story of us sort of going back to his life and seeing a lot of archival footage and things that have never been seen that his mom shot when he was a kid," Chu said. "We don't have as much of that in the trailer, [and] the movie uses a lot, 'cause we're finding it really fascinating to see him grow. It's one of the very few generations that have been able to be shot when they were a kid to a teenager and see all the steps of his development."

Describing the film as a "documentary musical," Chu said "as in life, when you listen to music, when words aren't enough to express your emotion, it goes into song." The songs in the film were taken directly from Bieber's concert stop at Madison Square Garden.

"It's really an interesting sort of pass between his real life to his music, so I think in the trailer, we break it down every step of the way in his life. Everyone said, 'It's not possible,' " Chu said. "Every step, everyone's always said, 'No, no, no, no.' And he's always said, 'Yes, yes, yes.' And that sort of 'never say never' idea is conveyed in the trailer.

"That's sort of the power of our movie: to help inspire kids to follow their dreams, and anyone really, kid or adult," he added. "It's been sort of a family journey of fulfilling your destiny."

30 Seconds To Mars, Ke$ha Plan Big VMA Arrivals

Can this year's nominees rival the elephants and yachts of years past?
By James Montgomery

30 Seconds to Mars
Photo: Myriam Santos/ Kayda

For much of the past decade, the MTV Video Music Awards has really been two shows: The one where they hand out the Moonmen, and the one that occurs on the red carpet, where the stars try their very best to outdo each other with over-the-top arrivals.

From yachts to 18-wheel trucks, elephants to horse-drawn carriages, how you arrive at the VMAs has become just as important as whether you take home an award. As you can probably imagine, sometimes, things get a little crazy.

"Usually, artists don't let us know [how they're arriving] until the last minute, which makes things interesting," Video Music Awards Pre-Show executive producer Ryan Kroft told MTV News. "A lot of times, they'll want to do things like land a hot-air balloon on the carpet, or drive a car down the carpet, but generally, the fire marshal frowns on those kinds of things, so we have to tell them 'no.' "

Still, there are plenty of ideas that do get the green light, and they're just as epic as the stars that thought them up. And this year's VMA arrivals are no different, though for aesthetic reasons, they're slightly scaled back.

"In New York, we had stars arriving on a fire truck, a double-decker bus, but that wouldn't play this year," Kroft said. "The carpet is designed to look like the stars are arriving at a Hollywood Hills mansion — white, chrome, glass — so having someone arrive with a marching band would seem somewhat out of place."

But there are big arrivals nonetheless: One of the biggest involves 30 Seconds to Mars, who have already started touting their entrance as being thoroughly crazy.

"30 Seconds to Mars are recreating a scene from their 'Kings and Queens' video," Kroft explained. "They'll have an army of bicyclists arriving with them, and they'll be riding bikes themselves. Most of the bicyclists are from the video."

Going equally big is Ke$ha, who has a few surprises ready for the VMA carpet. We don't want to give it all away, but here's what we can reveal: "Ke$ha has big plans for the carpet. I can't talk about all of them, but she is arriving in a Delorean, which she got herself," Kroft said. "It'll be like 'Back to the Future.' "

And, in keeping with grand tradition, there are still plenty of stars who haven't said how they're going to be arriving — Jay Sean is planning something "big and sexy," Soulja Boy Tell'em has some swaggadocious plans in the works, and Bruno Mars is still plotting, too — and then, there's Lady Gaga, who ... well, you never know what she'll do.

"We still don't know what some people are doing," Kroft laughed. "The only way you'll know is to tune in to the VMA Pre-Show and watch."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

Are Robert Downey Jr. And Zach Galifianakis A Good 'Due Date' Duo?

Downey compares them to other comedy teams ... like Ashford & Simpson.
By Kara Warner

Robert Downey Jr.
Photo: MTV News

In the upcoming film "Due Date," Robert Downey Jr. plays the straight man to the zany antics of Zach Galifianakis and a scene-stealing French bulldog named Honey (renamed Sonny by Galifianakis, we're told).

If you've seen the trailer, you know that Downey's character is trying to get home to his wife, who is going to have their baby very soon. Zach's character comes into the mix as an alternate mode of transport, which naturally turns out to be a cross-country road trip that destroys cars, friendships and nerves.

When MTV News caught up with one-half of this new comedic duo at the Los Angeles premiere of the film recently, we asked Downey to compare his two co-stars: Galifianakis and the French bulldog.

"Well, actually, Sonny is supposed to be a boy [and] is largely played by a female dog," the "Iron Man" star explained.

"Honey is her real name," Downey's wife Susan chimed in.

"Right. Honey is a bitch. Sonny is supposed to be this meat stick in the movie, so they pulled in a male dog, and that's how I think of Zach: He's kind of a hermaphrodite hound," Downey said with a smile.

Somehow, we imagine Galifianakis would take that assessment as a compliment. But where might he and the "Hangover" star rank among the great comedic duos in film history?

"I'll know a lot more in a couple hours, but I would say kind of Ashford & Simpson right now," Downey said. "We'll see if we get to Hope and Crosby."

Check out everything we've got on "Due Date."

Robert Shapiro Quits Lindsay Lohan

screen shot 2010-07-20 at 11.07.10 amJust one day before she was to surrender to Los Angeles authorities, Lindsay Lohan?s reported new lawyer decided to part ways from the star?s high profile case.

Celebrity attorney Robert Shapiro reportedly resigned from Lohan?s case Monday, forcing her old attorney Shawn Chapman Holley to represent the troubled actress once again.

Pop Tarts spies spotted Shapiro strolling into Judge Revel?s office at the Beverly Hills Court house at around 4 p.m., presumably to announce his stepping down. Holley is rumored to have no choice but to continue as Lohan?s legal representative, even though she announced her resignation a couple of weeks ago.

A rep was unable to confirm Shapiro?s departure Monday night.

What To Do If You're Afraid Of Getting Married

Engagement Ring

I had always been sure I wanted to get married, and the longer I dated Dean, the more sure I was that he was the right one for me. That is ... until I got engaged.

Dean's proposal wasn't a surprise. I was too nosy to not know it was happening, and I enthusiastically said yes the moment he asked. However, once it happened (in a sweet and thoughtful way, I should add), I began to feel these nagging questions eating away at me: Did I really want to be married? Would we be any good at it?

Oprah Winfrey Breaks the Silence on Men Who Are Sexually Abused

Oprah Winfrey Breaks the Silence on Men Who Are Sexually Abused

For 25 years, Oprah Winfrey has been giving women the courage to come forward with their stories of surviving abuse. Now she wants to empower male survivors to do the same. As a follow-up to Winfrey's October 20th sit-down with filmmaker Tyler Perry -- who spoke for the first time about the repeated physical and sexual abuse in his childhood -- Winfrey will dedicate two shows to the stories of men who were sexually abused as children. Winfrey is calling the shows "two of the most phenomenal" she's ever produced.

The first show, airing November 5th, will introduce an audience of 200 men, each holding a photo of himself at the age when he was first abused. Tyler Perry and a psychologist specializing in male sexual abuse survivors will speak to the crowd. On the second show, airing November 12th, the men in the audience will be joined by their significant others to discuss how the abuse has affected their relationships.

This is obviously not the first time that The Oprah Winfrey Show has taken on the issue of child abuse. Winfrey herself is a sexual abuse survivor, and came out spontaneously on an emotional episode in 1990. However, the fact that she's talking to men, and not women, is significant. When Perry told his story to Oprah, he said that being molested made him extremely confused about his sexuality.

"I knew I liked the little girls in the neighborhood, but this man was doing something to me and my body kept betraying me," says Perry, who was being sexually abused by a man at his church. "It took me all of my 20s to figure out what this was that this man had given me to carry inside of my heterosexuality that did not belong to me. This is why so many men will not talk about this — the shame of having to admit that."

Men are more likely than women to keep complicated emotions buried, and to fear that revealing abuse makes them somehow weak. Unfortunately, denying a childhood trauma is the worst way to deal with it; by burying that pain, victims force it to leak into their relationships with their significant others, and even their children. Oprah says she hopes that these two episodes "can be an open door to freedom" for men who have been abused. In her final season, perhaps Oprah will lift yet another veil of silence: allowing abused men to finally bring their pain out in the open, without fear of judgement or blame.

Today's Lady News: Jury Acquits Rapist Who Climbed In Window With A Knife

Jury Acquits Rapist Who Climbed In Window A Knife
  • Good news, ladies! A man who broke through a woman's kitchen window and raped her at knife point has been acquitted by a jury. Timothy West broke into a stranger's house at 1:30 a.m. and raped her while her family slept elsewhere in the house. When he was finished, he asked for her number, and she saw an opportunity to help the police catch him so she gave it to him. The victim's brother called 911 after he left and she can be heard crying in the background. Police secretly recorded their conversation when West called her the next day and said — get this — "I do apologize from the bottom of my heart. ... You mad at me? I can't call you no more?" The victim agreed to meet him at a Dunkin Donuts that night, but when he showed up, police were waiting and arrested him. A jury acquitted this fine human being because they assumed she must have known the victim and invited him over. Let me repeat this: They didn't believe her. I know all my hookups come in via the kitchen window holding a knife! Timothy West is currently in jail serving out the rest of an unrelated sentence for burglary. And then he'll be back on the streets. Good job, justice system. [Jezebel]

Kristen Stewart Recalls Being 'Sensitive' After 'Welcome To The Rileys'

Actress told us she would 'kill' someone for looking at a girl the wrong way, but she chalked the quote up to 'feeling a little spunky that day.'
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Kristen Stewart in "Welcome to the Rileys"
Photo: Samuel Goldwyn Films

At Sundance this past January, well over a year after Kristen Stewart wrapped shooting on "Welcome to the Rileys," the actress told us that playing the part of Mallory, a teen runaway turned prostitute, had changed her outlook on the interaction between men and women.

"I think I'm just a little bit sensitive," she admitted to MTV News. "If you looked at a girl wrong now, I would fly across the room and kill you. It's like I feel so, so, so protective of a certain thing women have."

While KStew still maintains that the role has shaped her, she stops short of using such forceful language and laughed about what she said back in Sundance. "I was probably feeling a little spunky that day," she told us.

And just for the record, she hasn't had any run-ins with inappropriate guys since Sundance — "luckily," she added, noting that over time she's become less thin-skinned, though no less connected to her character.

"I was overtly sensitive, more so than she would be," Stewart explained. "I was so touchy with that kind of thing. That's probably what I was talking about."

To really understand how Stewart was feeling when she dropped that "kill" quote, we have to flash back to Sundance, when she spoke at length about the role she called the most personal of her career.

"It's about understanding who you're playing, and you have a responsibility because you feel like you can't let them down," she told us back then. "[My character] really became a part of me. I haven't felt so personally involved in something. If I sort of flippantly played some stripper — there are some lines I thought were really funny in the movie — I think that's good, but at the same time, I didn't want to make something superficial."

Check out everything we've got on "Welcome to the Rileys."

'Paranormal Activity' Creator Lists His Sequel Requirements

'Found footage is a fairly important part of it,' Oren Peli tells MTV News of first two films.
By Eric Ditzian

Oren Peli
Photo: MTV News

After driving a movie that made more than $40 million its first weekend, the demon will rise again. Make no mistake about it: A sequel to "Paranormal Activity 2" will happen, and filmmakers already know where to take the story.

As director Tod Williams told us, he and the rest of the "PA" crew came up with a slew of ideas about the direction "PA 3" should take. But at this point, according to "PA" creator Oren Peli, no threequel discussions have taken place with Paramount.

"There haven't been any talks that I've been involved in," he told MTV News on Wednesday. "It's only been a couple of days since the weekend. I'm sure people are talking about it and thinking about it. There are probably going to be some discussions."

Peli said that, if "PA 3" is made, there's little chance he'll jump back into the director's chair. "For now I'm happy with my role as a producer," he said.

As a producer, though, he was intimately involved with the creation of "PA 2," and he told us that whatever happens in "PA 3," the movie needs to stay true to its roots of being found-footage-based and taking place in a regular family's house.

"I think found footage is a fairly important part of it in the way it presents the movie in very authentic footage, so it doesn't feel like a movie," he said. "And I think the other thing is what happens in your own home at night while you're asleep and you're vulnerable and there's an unseen force. You don't know what it is, you don't know how to protect yourself from it."

Check out everything we've got on "Paranormal Activity 2."

Jay-Z, Eminem Close Yankee Stadium Shows With Kanye West, Drake

Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, 50 Cent also make appearances at last of four Home and Home concerts.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Jay-Z performs at Yankee Stadium on Monday
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

NEW YORK — Like a good cleanup man in baseball, Jay-Z delivers big hits on a consistent basis.

On Tuesday night (September 14) at Yankee Stadium, the Brooklyn rapper closed out the fourth of his and Eminem's Home and Home shows (two in Detroit, two in the Bronx) with a performance that would make A-Rod envious.

"Break a record in this bitch, Hov," he rapped during a freestyle right after the opening number, the intro to his The Dynasty: Roc La Familia album. "Hit them with that BALCO."

The Roc Nation head, however, wouldn't need any performance-enhancing substances to give him an extra boost on this night. He confidently cruised through 90 minutes of material; Jay-Z was just as cool as the fall night.

Kanye West quickly arrived onstage two songs into the show for a mini-set of his own, riding shotgun with Hov on the "Power" remix and "Monster."

Jay-Z grabbed the crowd's attention again minutes later with an anecdote about his exit from the venue the night before. The legendary MC said on the way out after Monday's performance he ran into rap pioneer Kool Herc. Jay said he asked Herc to join him for Tuesday night's festivities, thanking Herc for creating hip-hop culture. "We wouldn't be here without you," he said.

"You ready for me to get out of here yet?" 'Ye asked Hov, bringing it back to the present.

"Not yet, we going all the way tonight," Jay-Z responded.

The Chicago star then burst into his "Good Life."

Next, Swizz Beatz joined Jay for "On to the Next One" before Eminem and the iconic lyricist traded verses on their collabo "Renegade." Eminem was agile onstage next to Jay-Z and appeared in arguably the best shape of his career.

"Go to war with the Mormons/ Take a bath with the Catholics," Em rapped. "In holy water/ No wonder they try to hold me under longer/ I'm a mother----in' spiteful, delightful, eyeful/ The new Ice Cube, mother----ers hate to like you."

Earlier in the evening, Eminem brought the capacity crowd to its feet by bringing out 50 Cent, who then brought out G-Unit's Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo with him. The trio from Queens sported glow-in-the-dark gear as the lights cut out during 50's performance of "I Get Money." Later, Fif ceded the stage to Em, and the Detroit superstar brought out Dr. Dre.

The hulking producer treated the crowd to "Still D.R.E." and "Nuthin' but a G Thang" sans Snoop Dogg; Eminem, though, filled in admirably for the Long Beach lyricist.

D-12 also took the stage during Em's set; the group dedicated their hit "My Band" to their fallen friend Proof.

The outfield was filled with fans, and their phones made the grounds look like a Lite-Brite as the screens lit up the stadium.

Jay-Z shouted out hip-hop's fallen heroes during his performance. He picked up Pimp C's "Big Pimpin' " verse a cappella and later ordered the DJ to play the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy" and "One More Chance."

The show was smooth, but not without any hiccups. Drake delivered a stirring version of his "Light Up" with Jay-Z; the Toronto star sported a Blueprint 3-designed Yankees fitted cap to pay homage to Hov. "Welcome to the stage a man that's been getting busy as of late," Jay told the audience. "He goes by the name Drizzy Drake."

But minutes later, Drake stumbled through his and Nicki Minaj's "Up All Night." Hov offered a mulligan to Drake and later a olive branch when he told the crowd during his final song that he may have to offer the Young Money rapper a "free verse" to make up for messing up his sound.

Although Jay's most memorable performance involved his guest stars (Beyoncé also joined him, as did Nicki Minaj), this time it was a familiar face that helped him with the most moving part of the show. Memphis Bleek and Jay-Z ran through a series of the latter's past numbers as an encore.

"I got a million of these," Jay repeated twice, as he introduced songs ranging from "Jigga My N---a," "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" and "Where I'm From."

"For anyone that hasn't been down since Reasonable Doubt," Jay-Z told the crowd shortly after midnight, "you can head to the [exit]."

Taylor Swift's Rockin' Night at JFK Airport

Continuing on her massive publicity tour, Taylor Swift performed at the JetBlue Airways terminal in JFK International Airport last night (October 27).

The ?Should?ve Said No? singer was quite a draw as she played selections from her brand new album Speak Now.

Speaking of the new record, there?s widespread speculation that Taylor may sell in excess of 800,000 copies in the first week alone.

Billboard analyst Keith Caulfield told press, "Expectations are high, very high. Let's say even though 1 million is possible, even if she doesn't get that, it will probably sell 800,000 or more, which will give her the give biggest single sales week for an album this year ... or last."

Justin Bieber's 'Never Say Never' Trailer: How Does It Stack Up?

Pop star's concert doc promo is similar to the Jonas Brothers' and Michael Jackson's.

"My name is Justin. This is how I drum."

Thus begins the trailer for "Never Say Never," Justin Bieber's 3-D concert documentary. That first clip isn't the only footage of the 16-year-old pop star back in his formative years. From vintage looks at Biebs tickling the ivories to grainy video of him strumming the guitar on some steps, the trailer tells the unlikely story of how a small-town Canadian kid beat the odds to become an international superstar.

It's an interesting narrative technique, one with both points of convergence to, and deviation from, previous concert doc trailers. As we gear up for the film's Valentine's Day release, it's time to size up the "Never Say Never" trailer in the context of what's come before it.

"Michael Jackson's This Is It"
At least in terms of its box-office draw, MJ's posthumous, $261 million-grossing flick is the concert doc against which all others must be measured. The trailers for "This Is It" and "Never Say Never" both feature some epic zooming title cards, lots of acrobatic dancers, crews saying nice things about the stars and an emphasis on attaining your dreams.

Yet, seeing as how MJ passed away last summer and Bieber's just getting started, the two trailers take markedly different approaches to telling the stories of those dreams. MJ's trailer feels like a look back at the final act in an iconic, if controversial, superstar's life. Bieber's trailer is more about establishing a young star's legacy.

"Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert"
Cyrus' approach to her trailer couldn't be more different than Bieber's. The Disney star starts off talking directly to the camera, hyping the upcoming movie and highlighting the presence of the Jonas Brothers. It's a much more in-your-face marketing approach, and one that feels dated just a few years later. Still, Bieber probably wouldn't complain about equaling Cyrus' $30 million opening weekend.

"Madonna: Truth or Dare
OK, you know what's even further away from Bieber's trailer in tone and content than Cyrus'? Madonna's! She wonders if a guy she likes just wants to sleep with her and if she'll be able to pull off an in-concert masturbation scene. And then there's the whole cone-bra bustier thing. There is, however, at least one point of similarity: the Queen of Pop's opening lines, when she talks about being in the spotlight, being worshiped by fans, and having lots and lots of money. Sounds a lot like Bieber's life at the moment, no?

"Shine a Light"
While "Shine a Light" is a documentary about a Rolling Stones concert, director Martin Scorsese plays almost as big a role in the trailer as Mick Jagger. "Never Say Never" helmer Jon Chu, alas, is never seen in Bieber's trailer. That's probably for the best. But like the "Never Say Never" trailer, "Shine a Light" employs the use of archival footage to put the current-day concert in context and showcases the artists doing what they do best: rocking out.

"Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience"
Screaming fans? Check. Massive stage productions? Check. Behind-the-scenes peeks at your idols? Check. There's even Joe Jonas tooling around on a Segway, just like Bieber. Yep, of all the concert movie trailers we surveyed, the JoBros' is the most similar to "Never Say Never." Let's just hope Bieber's movie does a little better at the box office. The brothers' 3-D flick made a paltry $19 million domestically.

Justin Bieber's 'Never Say Never' Director Explains Movie's Plot

'It's not just the concert ... this is a musical movie,' Jon Chu says.
By Jocelyn Vena

With the trailer out, fans can now begin counting down to Valentine's Day weekend 2011 when Justin Bieber's 3-D flick, "Never Say Never," hits theaters. And the movie's director, Jon Chu, explained just how he plans to integrate the concert footage, shot earlier this year at Bieber's show at Madison Square Garden, with the behind-the-scenes footage and interviews that he will also be using in the film.

"We had this sort of hyperlink idea through the film, which is what makes it really an interesting movie," Chu said. "It's not like the other concert films where you are onstage and then go backstage and then onstage and go backstage. It's not just the concert ... this is a musical movie, when words aren't enough in telling the stories of his life, [we use music]."

For example, Chu continued, "You know, if he's talking about his youth and talking about his magnetic smile, you start to hear 'U Smile' start to creep in the background and the underscore ... you see images from his life, and at the end of that song, the spotlight from the number connects with the spotlight of his tour bus and he goes back into his bed," Chu explained. "And there [are] hyperlinked ideas. It's kind of like 'Chicago,' when we're weaving in and out."

And for the haters, Chu says that this film will prove that Bieber is the real deal. "The number-one thing we wanted was the honesty in this," he explained. "People have a very preconceived notion of Justin Bieber and people can think whatever they want, but we wanted to show the honest other side of Justin."

So, who is the Bieber that Chu believes the film will show? "It's a crazy thing to see a kid from Canada, in a town like Stratford that's obsessed with Shakespeare, that this kid can know and be obsessed with R&B and be anointed by sort of the hip-hop, R&B world, that he is sort of blessed by them," he explained. "That's very, very special and interesting."

Justin Bieber's 'Never Say Never' Trailer Sends Inspiring Message

Bieber premieres the clip, which blends concert footage with home videos, at his Los Angeles show.

LOS ANGELES — In what was already a night full of surprises, Justin Bieber upped the ante at his Los Angeles tour stop by surprising the capacity crowd with the premiere of the trailer for his upcoming 3-D film, "Never Say Never."

After guest appearances by Usher and Sean Kingston, Bieber took time halfway into the show to make an announcement at the Staples Center.

"I don't know if I'm getting enough love tonight; it's gotta be louder — come on, guys!" The entire arena answered his call with a thunderous eruption of screams.

Satisfied with the reaction, the 16-year-old pop star continued by recalling the doubters in his life, those who said he'd never win a VMA or that he'd never get his own movie.

"I might get in trouble for this, L.A.," he said. "I got a special treat for you guys!" Then Bieber announced that he was going to debut the trailer as a thank-you to his fans.

With the lights dim, three large screens above the stage began playing the trailer, which first shows Justin as a toddler, banging an elaborate drum beat on a kitchen chair. A series of home movie clips chronicle his rise to fame — singing, playing keyboard, and strumming an acoustic guitar. Just 30 seconds in, it was almost impossible to hear the trailer over the fans' loud screams.

The preview follows with an explosion of eye-popping visuals from various concerts — sweeping camera moves that create an epic feeling. But what the trailer shows is that "Never Say Never" is more than a concert film. It takes you beyond the stage and shows his everyday life, and the famous people who helped him along the way. Most of all, the focus seems to be on the fans. There are chants of "Justin" in the background and firsthand accounts of the fans' devotion.

The trailer ends with Bieber giving words of encouragement to an audience.

"There's gonna be times where people tell you that you can't live your dreams," Bieber says. "This is what I tell them: Never say never!"

"Every step, everyone's always said, 'No, no, no, no,' " director Jon Chu told MTV News last week. "And he's always said, 'Yes, yes, yes.' And that sort of 'never say never' idea is conveyed in the trailer."

As loud as the Staples Center was at the beginning of the trailer, they raised the volume even more as it finished. Immediately following, Bieber broke into the film's title song, "Never Say Never," with the help of Jaden Smith.

And while the L.A. crowd only experienced the trailer in 2-D, you can experience the film in all its 3-D greatness when it opens Valentine's weekend, February 2011.

Beyonce Could Release New Single In Next Few Weeks

'Listening to New B record Dream wrote ... Y'all C in 3 weeks!' producer Los Da Mystro tweeted Wednesday.
By Jocelyn Vena

Fans are slowly but surely getting more and more details about Beyoncé's next album. And the latest word is that the singer could release her first single from the album within the next three weeks. While the name of the song is still unknown, it appears that Lady B is well on her way to releasing new music off her follow-up disc to 2008's I Am ... Sasha Fierce.

"Listening to New B record Dream wrote ... F---INg INSANE! WOw!! She About to Kill the game again! Had to Listen again!! Y'all C in 3 weeks!" producer Los Da Mystro, a frequent collaborator of The-Dream, who worked with Tricky Stewart on Beyoncé's hit "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," tweeted. "Thats what they sayn now.. But it is the music Business. could b sooner r lata."

MTV News hadn't received comment by Beyoncé's label by press time.

However, the producers and songwriters she's been working with on the album have been dropping hints about what fans might expect on Beyoncé's fourth studio album. So far Ne-Yo, Jim Jonsin and Sean Garrett have all opened up about penning tracks for the album. And with the tweet from Los Da Mystro, it's evident that she's once again working with The-Dream and Stewart.

B's last album spawned the hits "Single Ladies," "If I Were a Boy," her Gaga-collabo "Video Phone" and "Halo." And while it is unknown what direction this next album will take, Ne-Yo has pointed out that Beyoncé has an "agenda" all her own.

"She's an artist that knows exactly what she wants to do," he told MTV News. "She's going to give you directions [like], 'Here's where I'm going, so here's where I need you to be.' And, you know, I'm a person that follows direction well. [And she'll be like], 'So this is the sound, this is the vibe; make it happen.' And I write and she likes it or she doesn't. And in this case she did, and there you have it."

Since she killed off her alter-ego Sasha Fierce for her next album, this record will be all Beyoncé. Producer Jim Jonsin recently noted that while he wants to go even more '80s than the pair did on "Sweet Dreams," he's also looking to try out some other genres with the singer. "Even some sexy mid-tempos, see if she likes that and I'll try that too," Jonsin said.

Whatever the album ends up sounding like, Garrett promised that it won't be a rehash of previous material. He explained, "We're working on some really incredible music. We're going to stretch a little bit — take it to a whole new level, if Beyoncé can go to a whole new level. ... It's going to be her biggest album ever. We're going to take it to a whole other level."

Beyonce Pregnancy Rumors Surface Again

Sources tell UsMagazine.com that the singer is pregnant, months after similar rumors were shot down.
By Jocelyn Vena

Back in March, rumors that Beyoncé was pregnant were quickly shot down by the singer's rep. Now, seven months later, the same rumors are back. On Wednesday (October 20), UsMagazine.com reported that unnamed sources say B and her rap mogul husband, Jay-Z, are expecting a bundle of joy.

"B was shocked," one source reportedly told the site. "She loves kids, but she wasn't ready to be a mother just yet. She really wanted to get her album done and tour the world again." Another source added, "This is a gift from God and she's so happy." Although nothing is confirmed from Beyoncé or Jay-Z, it's being reported that the singer is in her first trimester.

The pair has always kept their private life private, but Beyoncé has been open to talking about motherhood. Earlier this year, she spoke to Allure magazine about the prospect of being a mother. "I definitely want to have a child, but I know from my nephew it's a lot. I hope that those things will just happen naturally. I still haven't had time to relax," she said.

The pair married in April 2008 and that same year Beyoncé told "Access Hollywood" there was a loose timeline of when she might want to have children. She explained, "The kids, I don't know ... in three years, maybe. It's a lot of work."

Regardless of whether or not she is pregnant, fans have been gearing up for a different kind of new arrival from B. Late last month, many speculated that Beyoncé would soon release a new single after producer Los Da Mystro — a frequent collaborator of The-Dream, who worked with Tricky Stewart on "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" — tweeted that he was listening to a new track that was going to be released in three weeks. That was in late September. No new music has been released yet.

Beyonce Says She's 'A Feminist, In A Way'

Singer also talks about retiring alter ego Sasha Fierce and starting a family, in You magazine.
By James Dinh

Whether it's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" or the Destiny's Child classic "Independent Women," most of Beyoncé's catalog consists of strong female-empowerment anthems. So it's no surprise that the singer considers herself to be a feminist.

In an interview with the U.K.'s You magazine, the pop star opens up about the importance of female companionship, not needing to hide behind Sasha Fierce and her much-talked-about baby plans.

"I think I am a feminist, in a way. It's not something I consciously decided I was going to be; perhaps it's because I grew up in a singing group with other women, and that was so helpful to me," she told the magazine. "It kept me out of so much trouble and out of bad relationships. My friendships with my girls are just so much a part of me that there are things I am never going to do that would upset that bond. I never want to betray that friendship, because I love being a woman and I love being a friend to other women."

Most recently, Beyoncé has certainly made her share of female friends in the industry. In the past year, the singer has collaborated with Lady Gaga ("Video Phone" and "Telephone") and Alicia Keys ("Put It in a Love Song").

While the singer might always have female besties, there's one thing she's cut out of the picture: alter ego Sasha Fierce. Earlier this year, the pop star revealed that she "killed" Sasha, and now she said the alter-ego absence is due to her newfound self-awareness.

"I don't need Sasha so much anymore, because these days, I know who I am. It takes time to figure out who you are, and I am still discovering different things about myself. As I am exposed to different experiences, I think, 'Oh, I like this. I didn't know I liked this,' " she explained. "That's the journey of life that is so exciting. More and more, I know who I am, I know what I like, I know what I want, and that makes me feel so free."

In fact, B already has her eye on some personal life goals. "My ambition is to continue to learn about the world and to eventually have a family," she said. And while Beyoncé remained coy about when she and husband Jay-Z will expand the Carter family, she hinted that there's really "no dates, no times" to motherhood. "It will happen when I am ready."
